The chef making this Russian dish, Larissa Blattler, is from Ul'yanovsk, Russia. Ul'yananovsk is a large city on the Volga River that makes it a very industrious city. She lived in Russia for 21 years before moving to Wisconsin, looking for a more fulfilling life. She continues to make this dish every winter with her family.
Russian Pelmene Ravioli is made as a family meal during the winter. Everyone in the family has a role in making this dish. The dough is made with fresh ingredients including, garlic,basil, salt, pepper, sugar and flour. The dough is wrapped around the pelmene (meat). The pelmene is a mixture of mushrooms, onion, garlic, salt, ground beef, mozzarella, and cheddar cheese. After the pelmene is cooked it is served with a cold cucumber sauce.
